ABSTRACT

In the previous pages I have considered the main elements of spatial vision: directions, movements, stereoscopic distances. We haven’t got very far that way. Intuitively we all know what sight is for: to be able, with the help of light, to observe, identify and localise the things in the world. But we haven’t even got that far. It almost seems as if our real purpose: to understand vision better, gets further away as we try to get nearer to it. To use a musical metaphor: it seems as though so far we’ve only been occupied with pitch, tone and the position of the players in the orchestra, but haven’t yet paid any attention to the melody, the composition.
