ABSTRACT
In this chapter we shall outline the ideas about learning and teaching upon which the work of the EXEL project was based and try to relate these to teaching approaches used. We shall begin by examining what we feel we have learnt from recent research into the nature of learning. We shall then go on to discuss a model of the teaching process and try to illustrate this by describing some teaching activities. These activities will be dealt with in greater detail later in the book.
