ABSTRACT
Where we begin and what we can discover depends on our aims and on the type of evidence we have at our disposal. In some cases we may not have any physical evidence of the building at all but will be relying totally on documentary evidence. In others the situation will be reversed. However, the following is a check-list of questions which form the basis of any attempt to understand buildings.
