ABSTRACT

Act No.14 of 1976 empowers the Corporation to negotiate for purchase, take on lease and payment for land required for any of its purposes. This is done within the Public Lands Acquisition Law. Some local governments have set aside sites for the development of housing estates in their local government areas. With the new development whereby the Corporation provides for itself, land acquisition will be jointly pursued by both the Corporation and Ministries of Works and Housing and Lands, Survey and Urban Development. Main fields of work Responsibilities are to ensure: • That implementation of housing programmes be undertaken by

official bodies at the State and Federal levels • That housing be provided for the whole spectrum of income groups in

the country's growth population • That to meet the total housing needs, standards should not exceed

available resources • That the States will formulate, review and implement their own

housing policies bearing in mind their varying experiences, needs, resources and cultural environments

• That direct control for targeting development areas, land acquisition and development management will reside at State level

• That steps are taken to encourage local production of building materials as a means of lowering housing costs and reduce dependency on imports

• An improvement in the quality of rural housing and rural environment, through integrated rural development programmes.
