The purpose of the National Research Council is to broaden the base of experts providing advice to the government by inviting scientists and engineers outside the Academy's limited membership to serve on advisory boards and committees. The Council has become the principal operating and business arm of the Academies of Science and Engineering. As an operational unit of the National Research Council, ABBE seeks to serve the national interests by fostering the sound development of science and engineering as applied to the built environment, and by promoting their effective application for the benefit of society.
