ABSTRACT

In this chapter we focus on the conditions which made possible the resurgence of, and expansion in, particular waged domestic labour forces in Britain in the 1980s. The explanatory form of our argument is much as in the previous chapter, emphasising the conjuncture of specific trends and circumstances. Moreover, our explanation again concentrates on specific categories of waged domestic labour, the cleaner and the nanny. However, before focusing specifically on these two labour forces it is important to consider why it is inappropriate to refer to a pool of waged domestic labour in contemporary Britain, and to outline the relation between demand for waged domestic labour and labour supply in Britain through the 1980s.
