ABSTRACT
Scarce information limits the scope of a biography of Lydus. What personal data we have derives entirely from his own books. Later writers who discussed his work or mentioned his name seem to have had no independent information about him. 1 In this chapter I examine Lydus’ career, for connections exist between the events of his professional life and the development of his attitudes about politics and government.
