ABSTRACT

The settlements we studied in Mexico differ widely in the resources available to them, in degree of accessibility, in past history and in present economy. Yet when women of different ages who had moved at different times to different places talked about their experiences of colonisation, we were surprised again and again by the strong similarities in their tales. We want in this chapter to present some of women’s experiences in their own words. Since we have extracted their words from interviews and life stories, this is still an etic, outsiders’ view, selected and organised by us. We believe that it still offers insights into the lives of pioneer women.
