ABSTRACT

Part III presents five chapters (8 to 12) of detailed case studies. The organisations studied were deliberately selected to represent a range of industrial sectors and, hence, competitive environments. The organisations covered are Severn Trent Water (Chapter 8), a water supply and sewerage company privatised in 1989; South West Electricity (Chapter 9), a regional electricity company privatised in 1990; British Airways (Chapter 10), the UK’s largest airline, privatised in 1987; British Steel (Chapter 11), the UK’s largest steel manufacturer, privatised in 1988; and The Post Office (Chapter 12), which remains wholly in the public sector and is responsible mainly for Post Office counters and the delivery of mail within the United Kingdom.
