ABSTRACT

The importance of the Straits of Malacca as an artery for human development has been noted in the introduction; the purpose of this and the following chapter is to examine the nature of the physical environment of the Straits before considering their impact on the human environment. The geology, climate, soils and vegetation of the Straits region have played an important part in shaping the ways in which different groups have evaluated and used the resources of the region. An understanding of the physical characteristics of the Straits can, we hope, provide a better appreciation of the extent of this influence on the human ecology and the economy of the littoral states, as well as the economic wellbeing of those countries whose ships ply these waters.
