ABSTRACT
In Chapter 1 we saw how changes in the extent and volume of land ice was a dominant feature of past climate changes at high latitudes. It probably played a crucial role in causing global changes and so it is important to understand the mechanisms that control the growth and demise of the Earth’s covering of ice-the cryosphere (from the Greek word for frost: kruos).
