ABSTRACT

Sophia’s move from Edinburgh to Mark Cross was quite an undertaking. She had always been an enthusiastic collector of books, and a hoarder of letters and documents. Furthermore, she could rarely bring herself to throw away old items of household equipment if they were still usable, so there was a great deal of sorting, discarding and packing to be done before Bruntsfield Lodge could be handed over to its new owners. Fortunately, Margaret Todd was there to help her; after only five years in medical practice she was retiring and coming to share Sophia’s home in Sussex. Margaret may have decided to devote her time to writing, or her health may have become a problem— the reason for her early retirement is not recorded.
