ABSTRACT
This unsigned review has long been attributed to Cardinal Wiseman, whose ‘fancy portrait’ Browning had drawn in ‘Bishop Blougram’s Apology’. Wiseman’s authorship was questioned in Boyd Litzinger, ‘Did Cardinal Wiseman. Review Men and Women?’, Victorian Newsletter (Fall 1960), No. 18, pp. 22-3. Professor and Mrs. Walter E. Houghton, editors of The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900, made the positive identification of Simpson.
