ABSTRACT

J.Kirkman, from his ‘Introductory Address to the Browning Society’ (28 October 1881), Browning Studies, ed. Edward Berdoe (1895), pp. 1-20.

Kirkman’s address, despite his opening disclaimer, set the tone for most of the Society’s efforts to spread the fame of their poet, with the result that an inevitable reaction followed (see No. 225, for example).
