ABSTRACT
Mrs. Oliphant (1828-97), in addition to plying the critic’s trade for Blackwood’s, wrote an enormous number of novels, of which probably the best was Salem Chapel (1863). Her comment that Browning is ‘too careless of popularity’ is interesting in light of the great popularity her now-forgotten novels once enjoyed. The following is extracted from her unsigned feature, ‘The Old Saloon’.
