ABSTRACT
English poetry, for example, was marked by kennings, poetic metaphors such as swan’s bath and whale’s road for ‘sea’ and circumlocutions such as giver of rings for ‘lord’. Most contemporary poets would probably subscribe to the view that there are no specifically ‘poetic’ words, only words which are either poetically appropriate or inappropriate.
