ABSTRACT
There are many words, usually latinate and polysyllabic, that are used vaguely or inaccurately because speakers are not certain of their meanings. Sometimes such misuse can lead to a change of meaning, (aggravate, for example, has taken on the meaning of ‘irritate’) but often it results in poor communication or the blurring of useful distinctions.
