ABSTRACT

She was born in Staten Island, New York. Her parents were not performing artists, but their professional interests-her father was an architect and her mother a mathematician-were certainly compatible with their daughter’s future choreographic concerns. She received early training in both music and dance at the Third Street Settlement in New York City, later studying at the School of American Ballet. She continued training in ballet, modern, and jazz dance techniques at the High School of Performing Arts where she graduated with honours in 1963.
