ABSTRACT
Louis met Nikolais at the Hanya Holm Summer School of dance at Colorado College in 1946. There, in Nikolais’s classes, as he tells it, he ‘suddenly realized the huge scope of dance movement’. He joined Nikolais at the Henry Street Playhouse and became soloist at the Playhouse Dance Company (later renamed the Nikolais Dance Theater) when it was formed in 1949.
