There has been a rapid increase in the amount of research in psychotherapy since the first edition of this book. In this section we attempt to summarize some of the main findings and to answer some fundamental questions. The interested reader is recommended to Bergin and Garfield (1994) for an extensive account of all research findings, to
Aveline and Shapiro (1995) for some excellent summary articles, and to Roth and Fonagy (1996) for a review of psychological treatments of the major mental disorders.
