ABSTRACT
Maternity was the almost inevitable consequence of heterosexual activity in adult women: desired in some cases, not wanted or feared in others. Maternity was also a social relationship involving care of children. Here we have enlarged the subject of maternity to include childcare by women – aunts, grandmothers, and wet-nurses – who were responsible for overseeing the health and welfare of children.
