Writer and journalist, Peter Popham, grew up in London, spent his university years in the English regional ‘capital’ of Leeds and later moved to Tokyo, from where he emerged as a respected commentator upon architecture and cities. To him ‘Streets seem to have little significance in the Japanese urban scheme of things to warrant the prestige that names confer’ (Popham, 1985, p. 48).
