ABSTRACT

The outcomes of the work described in this book can not be conveyed fully by the following attempt to summarize them in what are inevitably theoretical terms. This is because the outcome of practical reflection ‘is both a theory and a form of action’ (Elliott, 1987: 163) or, to put it another way: ‘Theorising about the nature and purpose of a practice is not a separate activity, albeit an interacting one, to reflecting about how to proceed competently with it’ (Elliott, 1989a: 13).
