ABSTRACT

The philosopher Pythagoras once visited Phlius. The king marvelled at his wisdom and asked what sort of man he was. Pythogoras replied that he was a philosopher. Life is like a market at the great festivals, he said, some come to win, others to barter. But there are others who consider this nothing; they come to study and contemplate life-they are lovers of wisdom, philosophers, and this was how the word arose. The small anecdote (Cic. Tusc. disp. V 9; cf. Aristot. П П oП П . B 18 Düring) speaks of a new human ideal.
