ABSTRACT

The world system is changing; the US is no longer supreme and unchallengeable. The Cold War is ending, but paradoxically, the danger of hot war may be greater than ever. Unless the next half century sees significant development in the Third World the turmoil there may engulf us all. But if Third World industrialization follows the same course as that of the First and Second Worlds, we will be lucky to survive the environmental disasters that will follow. This is the dilemma of our times, and it has to be managed at the level of the whole.
