ABSTRACT
The development potential of railway station areas is closely connected to their features both as nodes and as places. Chapter 2 anticipated not only that there are development potentials on both sides, but also that they can contribute to each other’s potential. Next to opportunities, constraints and possible sources of conflict have also been indicated. In this chapter both dimensions of development will be elaborated, starting with the node. The discussion here is centred on the transport of passengers in Europe. Section 3.2 treats place, a dimension that has been receiving more and more attention as interest rises in the station area as an object of property investment. In section 3.3, starting from a discussion of the Japanese example, an attempt is made to show how node and place developments can contribute to each other’s development in practice.
