ABSTRACT

The security checks at the entrance to the inner cellblock were comprehensive, stringent and intense.

Letters of authority and permissions to go in were examined line by line and compared with copies already held on file. Passport and driving licence were closely scrutinised, numbers authenticated, photographed and then retained. Signatures were matched, distinguishing physical characteristics such as eye colour and complexion were studied and noted. All jacket and trouser pockets were emptied and left hanging with their insides pulled out; shoes and socks were removed, felt carefully and minutely, and prodded, looked in and searched. Handkerchiefs and tie were unfolded and vigorously waved. Into a locker for items not allowed went wallet and billfold and all small change; as did tissues and aspirin, comb, keyring and keys.
