ABSTRACT

I am an oral historian who has had twenty books published in the last thirty years. I have recently been given an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Essex for my work in this field, and my methods are these:

1 Before I begin my tape-recorded interview I explain to the person I am talking to exactly what I am doing-what the interview is for, and how, if it is used, what the context is in which it will appear. I also explain it will take between 45 minutes and 1 hour.
