ABSTRACT

In this chapter I want to show how Epipalaeolithic hunter-gatherers became Neolithic farmers despite themselves. That is, they became farmers as a consequence of developing their gathering regime. Thus, they became caught up in a sequence of changes, the outcome of which was settled village agriculture and this process of cause and effect become the cause of another effect and so on, can best be expressed in the form of a flowchart (Figure 5.1).
