ABSTRACT
We must now look at the practice of psychiatry, especially those aspects that raise ethical problems. In this chapter, I will concentrate on the guardianship thesis, asking whether we are justified in treating patients against their will. And more generally, whether psychiatrists are justified in imposing their values on their patients. I will look at these issues not only in cases where patients are involuntarily hospitalized and treated, but also in those cases where treatment is allegedly voluntary.
