ABSTRACT

In terms of Transformational Growth, the comparison of Argentina and Canada in the OBC and NBC is very revealing. In the OBC, both were predominantly agricultural economies with small craft-based manufacturing. By the end of World War II Canada had moved ahead of Argentina and their paths continued to diverge through the NBC. There are many aspects that could be considered in analyzing the differences between Canada and Argentina in the NBC, but, as Carlos Diaz-Alejandro (1970:30) aptly put it, “Canada benefited from her proximity to the US and her special association with Great Britain.” The close association with Great Britain had a tremendous impact on Canada’s development in the OBC (particularly on its social and political institutions) but the country’s proximity and close trading ties with the United States had a great impact on it in the NBC.
