ABSTRACT

The geography coordinator has a very important role to play in leading the process of how a school comes to define its aims and practice in geographical education. There are still heavy demands on both teacher and curriculum time to cover everything expected in the National Curriculum. The relative status of geography in the primary school is low and has already been discussed. If you are to feel confident in leading this debate it will be helpful to have a clear understanding of

■ current thinking about effective practice in geography; ■ the interpretation of ‘official’ requirements; ■ a broader context in which to assess this information, along with your own beliefs and values about both

geography and education generally.
