ABSTRACT

Becoming an effective geography coordinator Your work as a coordinator will be strongly influenced by the contexts discussed in the previous chapter. However, perhaps one of the most important skills you can bring to your role is the ability to get on with people. If you are successful, there is a much greater possibility of change occurring, but change itself is an interesting feature within the school environment. It is unlikely to occur simply by presenting staff with a completed policy, a large pile of maps —or through the imposition of more government legislation. ‘Change occurs only when teachers believe in the need for it, know where it is going, are committed to it and have some ownership of it,’ (Harrison, 1995) are important points to bear in mind when you undertake your role of geography coordinator. Colleagues will be looking at how you develop your role and drawing inferences about what you actually believe in and intend to do.
