ABSTRACT

The Code of Practice implies that Individual Education Plans (IEPs) will help pupils to learn more effectively by targeting specific learning needs. However, for IEPs to do this, they must be developed within the context of the whole curriculum — which the Code does not address. In order to help children with SEN to learn more successfully, you have to consider the context of teaching and learning and all aspects of the curriculum — classroom organisation; grouping of pupils; curriculum content and delivery, including a teacher's style and theirperceptions of teaching and learning. It is important to remember that the majority of children on the SEN Register will be taught by other teachers (not you!) and these teachers may have very different approaches to teaching — from each other and from you. As a SENCO you must be confident about a range of ways of managing teaching and learning which can offer support to teachers as well as learners.
