ABSTRACT

This booklet takes as its subject the BBC news magazine programme Nationwide which started out on the air way back in 1966. The trend of books looking at popular television output-Hazell was recently reviewed on this page-would seem to be a growing one. Indeed it is a development that should be encouraged as far too little serious attention has been paid to those programmes which several millions of viewers tune into regularly. However, this slim volume-which comes to us courtesy of the British Film Institute’s Educational Advisory Service-is hardly likely to promote interest in the field. Rather it will put people off. I would go so far as to say it is an antieducational piece of writing because it is written in a language and style that would be virtually inaccessible to the vast majority of the population. It is a work that reeks of the most offensive arrogance. Strong words. But why?
