ABSTRACT
Scheffler holds that ‘science is a systematic public enterprise, controlled by logic and empirical fact, whose purpose it is to formulate the truth about the natural world’. This ‘standard’ view is opposed to the idea that scientific disagreements may not be completely decideable by rational debate, either because observation is itself theory-laden or because theory choice is not wholly determined by logic and empirical fact.
