ABSTRACT

These are snapshots, taken in 1996, of provision and practice in a number of primary schools in England, all of which have the National Curriculum in place. What is evident is that the type, quantity and quality of provision is still hugely varied. The feature that seems to make the most positive impact is the presence of a teacher or teachers who have enthusiasm and confidence to be involved in teaching music and to make sure that it is valued by the school community. It is these qualities of confidence and enthusiasm, as well as a creative approach to teaching, which are the hallmarks of good practice.
