ABSTRACT

Already two Prime Ministers, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi have lost their lives at the hands of separatists. Another, V.P. Singh, was toppled through mass protests and agitation by upper-caste Hindus who did not care for his positive action and equal opportunity policies for the lower socio-economic and caste groups (officially known as scheduled castes and tribes). Newspapers continuously report incidents, sometimes violent and brutal, between Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and so on. In fact, at times, the violence between groups has reached such critical points that this conflict

visible and pro-active role in attempting to create a new Indian identity based on religion, i.e. (their definition of) Hinduism. Focusing on Pariwar politics will help me to deal with my first question which was about who and what is involved in the process of redefining identities.
