ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the estimates of the ex-ante real interest rates for the eleven countries included in this study. This is done, wherever possible, using the four procedures discussed in the last chapter. While the estimates for the pre-tax interest rates are presented for all of the countries included, the post-tax are presented only for a subset of the sample, because of the unavailability of the tax rate data. The rates included are both short and medium term. The estimated rates are used to shed light on two specific issues: first, whether the observed nominal interest rates have served as a reliable proxy or a signalling device for the behaviour of the ex-ante real interest rates, and second, whether they have been equal across the countries.
