ABSTRACT

Total energy consumption in the UK has varied comparatively little over the past 25 years. The significant changes in energy consumption which have occurred during that period have been in how the total has been made up. Energy consumed by industry has fallen, and energy consumed by transport has increased. North Sea oil has reduced the proportion of UK energy consumption met by imports. There has been a marked decline in consumption of energy from coal, and a rise in the consumption of energy from gas.1 Carbon dioxide emissions have fallen slightly during this period.
