ABSTRACT

Queer theory’s early alliance with activist movements like Queer Nation and Act-Up meant that theory-making would maintain an ongoing dialogue with activism and political performance. Nonetheless, the “theory” end of the “queer theory” formulation has remained rather rigid and traditional in its meaning. In this respect the “theory” in queer theory has not been queered. In this essay I will consider performance as a site of theoretical production to enhance the body of queer theory discourse. To my mind the performance sites most worth investigating are the works by artists whose experiences are marked by multiple points of antagonism within the social.
