ABSTRACT

In this section we will explore the differences in the educational experiences of girls and boys. Many studies (e.g. French and French, 1984) suggest a three-fold process. First, that children learn gender identity through the primary socialization process at home, involving the media, the toys they play with, and the comics and books that they read. Second, that they consequently arrive at school with firmly embedded ideas of gender appropriate behaviour and attitudes. Third, that schools through their organizational structures both formally and informally reinforce these stereotypes.
