ABSTRACT

The present headteacher was appointed to the headship of Risca Town Primary School in January 1992 to prepare for the amalgamation of that school and Danygraig Primary School into a school designed and built to meet the needs of education today. The move took place in May 1993 and the school now has a roll of 375 pupils with a further thirtynine half-day pupils in the nursery. In addition to the headteacher there are fourteen teachers, six of whom were teachers at Danygraig or Risca Town, and four NNEB assistants, three specifically for special needs. As a matter of school and county policy a small Downs Syndrome specialised unit was integrated into the mainstream school. To meet both staff and parental anxiety, a programme of staff development was initiated. Fortunately, one of the staff transferring from a closing school possessed the Advanced Diploma in Special Needs and was appointed SEN coordinator; and in 1995 the school was able also to appoint a Key Stage 1 coordinator who holds the Certificate in Management of Special Educational Needs.
