ABSTRACT
It is common knowledge that the Mahāyāna, ‘Great Way’ or ‘Great Vehicle’ Buddhism, used the doctrine of yāna, Ways, to explain its own relationship to the Buddhism which went before it. The Mahāyāna did not reject earlier Buddhism but included it as a lower level within its own spiritual hierarchy.
