ABSTRACT

The visual resources collection, known variously as an image collection, image archive, slide collection, or slide and photograph collection, has been growing and evolving in North American educational and cultural institutions since the early days of photography. Some of the earliest documented collections, started between the 1880s and 1900, include the Art Institute of Chicago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois, and the American Museum of Natural History.2
