ABSTRACT

Designing in the building process has always been considered to be an activity carried out by architects and engineers. This is because they are the professions who propose the end-product of the building process, that is to say, the building’s form and material fabric, supporting structure and environmental controlling services. Distinctions between architectural design and engineering design have also been made, the former being focused more on the aesthetic appearance of a building, and the latter on its structural and environmental performance. Recently, even UK quantity surveyors have been arguing for the title of designer, as under the traditional method of procurement they often have a cost, and sometimes specification, input to the project information.
