The Orthodox Caliphate and the Umayyad Dynasty

The Caliphate—i.e., the period of the Caliphs or Successors of Muḥammad—extends over six centuries and a quarter (632-1258 A.D.), and fails into three clearly-marked divisions of very unequal length and diverse character.
