ABSTRACT
The instrument most frequently played by the literati was the qin, although a few other instruments, such as the pipa, zheng and xiao (vertical bamboo flute, similar to the ancient chiba) were also used sometimes. Common topics of the qin pieces were beautiful scenes of nature, historical stories, or personal feelings, and the styles were often exquisite and elegant.
