ABSTRACT
Towards the end of the summer of 1845 the rain that fell far and wide across Ireland carried within it spores of a fungus that would soak down deep into the soil. This invisible invader was to bring death and devastation to more ‘Britons’ than would die in the Great War of 1914–18.
