ABSTRACT
On 4 August 1914 the British government declared war on Germany. John Redmond, the leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, agreed to accept the suspension of the Home Rule legislation for the duration of the war and declared his party’s total support for the war effort. Carson and the Unionists did the same.
